John Guillemette — writer, artist, and illustrator of Gina School — shares his remarkable journey from manic episodes and psychiatric misdiagnosis to finding clarity by disinfecting COVID rooms during the pandemic's darkest days. In this deeply philosophical conversation about paradoxes, dualities, and "the strangeness of existing," John reveals how his worst years (college) became everyone's best, his best year (2020 as a hospital janitor) was everyone's worst, and how psychiatrists labeled his artistic dreams as "grandiose thinking" to medicate away. From knocking on Professor Gina Bureka's door with a garbage manuscript to their 40-year age-gap collaboration on a book of 103 illustrated wisdom drops, this is a story about appearing interesting versus being interested, steps of care as life philosophy, and why authentic human creative collaboration can never be replaced.
