Dr. Michael Chapman is a pioneer in orthopedic trauma surgery and emeritus professor at UC Davis. After serving as chief of orthopedic surgery in the U.S. Army (Belgium and Germany, 1968–1970), he joined UC San Francisco in 1971, helping establish the orthopedic trauma subspecialty and co-founding the Orthopedic Trauma Association. In 1979, he became chair of UC Davis's Department of Orthopedic Surgery, serving for over two decades. Mike holds the inaugural Michael W. Chapman Chair and has 190 publications, eight U.S. patents for bone fixation systems, and has given 589 invited lectures. His five-volume Chapman's Comprehensive Orthopedic Surgery is now in its fourth edition. The UC Davis Medical Center Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion is dedicated in his honor. This year, he was named Pillar of the Orthopedic Profession by the American Orthopedic Association. Married to Betty for 64 years, Mike is an avid kayaker, golfer, gardener, and adventure traveler who speaks German fluently and was formerly an avid skier and mountaineer.
