SHOW NOTES

Ian Edwards is a British figurative sculptor with more than 36 years of professional experience, an internationally collected artist, and a World Archery 3D Longbow World Champion — but his story begins far from any podium or gallery. Ian left school at 16 with severe dyslexia and no qualifications, barely able to write his own name, yet carrying an inner knowing that his worth was never tied to grades or ability. In this conversation with Dr. Dan, he traces the path from a working-class childhood in which arts and crafts first opened the door to presence, to a woodcarving apprenticeship where his mentor Ray trained him as much in self-realization as in craft, to the awakening at 19 that has shaped his art and life ever since.

Together, Dr. Dan and Ian explore twice-exceptionality and neurodiversity, why self-worth can't be built on achievement or outside validation, and what Ian calls the self-seeking mind — the restless ego that drives pressure, exhaustion, and burnout. Ian shares how he raised his sons to find their calling rather than simply take a job, and offers simple, practical ways to create space between ourselves and our thoughts: focusing on the breath, honest reflection on our motives, and truly listening to another person. It's a conversation about the one thing that matters most — the quality of your life — and the daily practice of being true to yourself.

Key Concepts:

  • Twice-Exceptionality (2e): Having abilities at the extreme high end of the bell curve (cognitive, artistic, leadership) alongside significant challenges such as dyslexia or other neurodivergence... an asynchronous profile that is often confusing for the individual and the adults around them.

  • Presence: A state of aware, silent attention beneath the stream of thought, being fully here rather than lost in the mind's running narrative.

  • The Self-Seeking Mind: Ian's term for the ego... the part of the mind that relentlessly seeks validation and self-enhancement, driving pressure, exhaustion, and burnout when left unobserved.

  • Flow: The absorbed state of mind that arises during wholehearted creating or doing, where self-consciousness falls away and attention rests fully in the activity.

GUEST BIO

Ian Edwards is a British figurative sculptor with over 36 years of professional experience whose work is collected internationally and explores themes of awakening, self-realization, presence, surrender, and the human journey. Alongside his career as an artist, Ian is a World Archery 3D Longbow World Champion, European Champion, and British Champion. Severely dyslexic, he left school at 16 with no formal qualifications and found his way into a woodcarving apprenticeship, where a remarkable mentor trained him as deeply in self-awareness as in craft — an education that led to a profound inner awakening at 19 and has informed his work ever since. Today, through his sculpture, writing, and speaking, Ian explores the relationship between presence, fulfillment, performance, and self-realization from his studio in the UK, where he lives with his family.
